Last week, I was playing around with several Twitter applications. I went to Twitterchat.com (don't do it) and I ignored the warning message that stated:

"WARNING: Do not use your current twitter account! It will rebroadcast all your private message and mess up your account! Create a new twitter account for your twitterchat."

I had no idea I was direct messaging the world! Since I had my mobile device turned on my Twitter account ended up receiving over 1, 567 text messages on my phone.

I think I have removed the program but I am not really sure yet. I have turned off text messages and have gained many followers.

When I do something, I DO it BIG.

It was a BIG Fat mistake that I won't make again. I ended up deleting my twitter name. Twitter customer support seems to be overloaded with these issues. I had no idea there was a known issue with reinstatement of accounts.

As it turns out, I was able to reinstate my old name this week I changed my old twitter name. I also went through my follows and following removing weird followers.

It appears changing my name did finally stop the Tweeterchat direct messaging. Only time will tell.

Ugh, how very shady, Lin.

In general, I'd always advise users to be extra careful when giving their Twitter log-in credentials to third-party applications. Some are trustworthy, but many or not.

So sorry this happened to you, Lin-- and hope those messages have stopped overloading your phone!
