Kath, we just love you. I have to say you've given me the best laugh on this thread; thank you! Shelia, I've heard moth balls work on goffers, or did you mean bug bugs? My MIL worked in a flower shop for 30+ years, I gave up on organic and went straight for the "kill the suckers" on her advice. -- Moof, the other white meat.

Oh goody, we went from mice to ticks. This thread just keeps getting better and better! I can't help you with what to get rid of bugs with Sheila, I'm BIG on no chemicals. If I had a problem with bugs, I'd look into something organic. -- Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, "Where the heck is my ceiling?!"

Well I was hoping the mice problem was gone but we caught one more this week. It was a house mouse. I just can't seem to find where they are getting in the basement. Perhaps once we can get out and get the yard ready for Spring it will make it easier to see. I do need to find something really good to use on my yard that will help with insects but not harm animals since we have a dog who loves to play in the yard. Any suggestions. I seem to remember my ex-husbands parents using something called Malathon on their yard around the perimeter of their home in the early Spring. Although they didn't really have any animals to worry about that weren't fenced in fields. -- "War is like love; it always finds a way." - Bertolt Brecht

My boy got one so far in his ear I had to go to the doctors to get it out. I know the warnings on deet, but we use strong deet up here come spring. My brother in law got lime disease, I'll take precautions with deet. Revolution works good on the pets, though we had a real bad tick year and there were a few times I found "kernels of corn" on the floor that were really over filled ticks. I think those pictures did it for Kathleen! I can remember my mom having to get ticks out of our heads when we were kids and played outside often. I even got one in my ear once! -- "War is like love; it always finds a way." - Bertolt Brecht

Deer mice carry the lime disease ticks, too. Ticks a better topic than mice, Kath? I love being evil. -- Moof, the other white meat.

Well it's not over. They have been eating the poison. We have caught 2 more since my last post. One was a gray mouse, the other the same type. Gray mice scare me more than the other. Did you know grey mice can climb vertically up any rough surface? They can also jump onto a surface 13 inches tall. The one good thing is they do not carry hanta virus or Lyme disease like the white-footed mice do. I am really wondering how they are getting in. I sure hope they don't make it upstairs! Kathleen I had to post pictures for you! The first one is the deer mouse or white footed mouse. The second is your standard house mouse. -- "War is like love; it always finds a way." - Bertolt Brecht

Mice are little and cute, rats are big and ugly. And yes, there are different kinds of mice. Snakes want variety, too. Grossing you all out so makes the rest of my day. >=D -- Moof, the other white meat.

Deanne it was in our basement that we heard it! Well I am hoping our problem is solved. We set out some traps and some poison down there. What was strange is it wasn't a normal brown house mouse at all. They were either deer mice or white footed mice. I also think we worked out where they were coming in. We had a drain pipe down there with no mesh cover. It's got a cover now! We haven't heard or caught anything else in 2 days so I am hoping. Oh and Jan you sound like me, I was just about ready to book a room until I was sure they were all gone. I still might... I have my fingers crossed that we might be rid of them now. -- "War is like love; it always finds a way." - Bertolt Brecht

You people and mice are so funny. Do you have a basement? They can get in down there and burrow up in the walls. You could use decon, which will work, but warning! They will die in the walls and smell for weeks. But they'll die. Squirrels are another good guess, and they'd come in from the eaves, so look up for holes around the edge of your house. -- Moof, the other white meat.

Sheila, I would suggest you move, but that might be a little harsh. I had a lovely problem with mice myself this year. I'll tell you what worked great were those things (see how technical I am?) you plug in the wall. They emit a high pitched sound that make rodents of all kinds scatter. I think you can get 4 for about $20. I keep mine plugged in all the time now and all is well! -- Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, "Where the heck is my ceiling?!"

Ok I think I have a critter of some sort in my house. My daughter heard it scratching at the wall in her room the other night. I am not sure if it could be a mouse or perhaps a squirrel, since that can be common around here too. It's time to search the outside of the house and see if I can find some way something is getting in. I am hoping it isn't mice or a rat. We have an empty property next door. Anyone have any suggestions? We haven't seen any droppings or gnawing. -- "War is like love; it always finds a way." - Bertolt Brecht

Well I was enjoying the nice weather and then out of nowhere a cold front moved in. We finally got snow! Enough that they put the schools on a two hour delay, so the kids were thrilled. I have a feeling come spring the insects will take pleasure in reminding us of our nice warm winter if we don't get a bit of cold weather this year. -- "War is like love; it always finds a way." - Bertolt Brecht
